A Large Recall Problem for Nissan

Posted on: 03/02/2016

The problem as reported by Automotive News reporter David Shepardson is unusual for three reasons. The article states "Nissan Motor Co. said it will recall about 870,000 Nissan cars in the United States and Canada for potentially faulty hood latches, marking the third time since 2014 the automaker has recalled vehicles to address the problem."

This is the first time I’ve read that a vehicle has been recalled three times for the same problem. If the problem on the first recall had been correctly repaired the second and third would not have been necessary. It includes models from 2013 through 2015.

The problem, according to Nissan, is that its secondary hood latch may bind on account of improperly applied rust coating and remain in the unlatched position when the hood is closed. This could result in the hood unexpectedly opening while driving.

Thankfully, Nissan reports that no crashes or injuries have been reported related to the recalls.
