A Record Auto Recall in 2016

Posted on: 03/20/2017

Writing for Automotive News David Shepardson said “Automakers recalled a record 53.2 million vehicles last year in the United States after a massive expansion of the callbacks to replace Takata Corp. airbag inflators, the U.S. Transportation Department said on Friday.”

Another record was established with 927 recall campaigns which was an increase of 7 percent from 2015.

One reason for the surge recalls was the huge increase in auto deaths in 2015 over 2014. And, early estimates from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration indicate 2016 will show another huge jump. Listed below are the number of deaths from 2012, 13, 14, and 15.*

YearNumber of deathsPercent of increase/decrease
201233,561+2.6% from 2011
201332,719-3.3% from 2012
201432,675-0.09% from 2013
201535,092+10.5% from 2014

U.S. motor death statistics reported by government only include those on public roads; they do not include parking lots, driveways and private roads.
